Meade / Resume / Statement
Art…its
true effort is to open to us dimensions of the spirit and of the self
that normally lie smothered under the weight of living.
Printing
from woodblocks is the medium that I’ve been exploring these previous
five years. This interest developed following a workshop with Printmaker
Hester Stinnett at the Haystack Mountain School on Deer Isle in 2002.
In this new
passion is where I primarily spend my days. As is true in all engaging
creative paths, as one foot falls the other is already mid-step, anxious
to travel on. The possibilities are endless, and exciting.
Illustrating children’s books is the other focus of my work life. Since
illustrating the first book in 1992, twenty or so books have followed. A
number of these books have received recognition through awards, the two
most notable being a Caldecott Honor for HUSH! A Thai Lullaby,
written by Minfong Ho, and the Charlotte Zolotow Award for Creative
Writing for John Willy and Freddy McGee.
Education -
Following completion of a BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School
of Design, various workshops have kept me engaged with others and their
ideas. They include drawing, painting, printmaking, basket making, and
fabric design.
